The History of Jake's
It was a family affair when
Jake's opened for business in 1949.
John Jacobson
and his brothers, Marty, Donald, Bob, and Bill,
all dug clams and trapped lobsters in the waters
surrounding Hull. Brother-in-law Bob Oliver also
supplied lobsters from his own boat. The first
cook at Jake's was sister, Betty Oliver.
Throughout the years, many nieces, nephews and
cousins worked the fryers at Jake's, and thus
earned money for their college educations!
In 1953, after leaving his
job at the Hull Municipal Light Plant, John began
working Jake's full-time with his wife "Dot"
(Ayers). In the meantime, Marty moved his family
to Upstate New York to open another Lobster Pound
and restaurant. In 1957, John added a patio, (now
our inside dining area) and began serving fried
seafood, and Jake's now famous Lobster Salad Roll.
In 1970 John and Dot added a
cocktail and dining room to Jake's. Unfortunately,
John lived only one season after realizing his
dream. He passed away in April 1971 at the age of
46. Dot continued to run the business each
summer with the help of friends like Pat Anastos
(Jake's very first "Hostess of the Mostess" and
John’s cousin Ray Chase (now owner with his wife
Jacqui of the very popular Schooners Restaurant in
Hull) until 1984.
In the winter of 1984, the
O'Brien family of Hull
bought Jake's from Dot.
Jim, one of 7 children of Barbara and Ed, a
graduate of the School of Hotel and Restaurant
Management at UMass Amherst, took over the day to
day operation of Jake's in the summer of 1985.
As new owners, Jim and his
family replaced the paper plates with china
dishes, added grilled, baked, and broiled seafood
to the original fried and boiled seafood menu, and
a full service seafood market. Since then, Jake's
been named
Best Seafood Restaurant on the South
Shore by 2 different and independent Reader's
Polls for 4 years running, and has also received
the highly coveted "Best of Boston" Award from
